Portland pedestrian hit by garbage truck loses leg

A man lost a leg Monday morning when he was struck by a garbage truck at Southwest 5th Avenue and Morrison Street, police said.

Police say a garbage truck has hit a pedestrian in a downtown Portland crosswalk and severed one of the man's legs.

One of Busch's legs was severed in the crash, police said. An officer applied a tourniquet to his leg before medical staff arrived and transported him to OHSU hospital. Police said Busch is expected to survive.

Scott R. Busch was crossing at the intersection of Southwest 5th Avenue and Morrison Street when a garbage truck made an illegal turn from 5th Avenue and hit him. Emergency responders arrived quickly to stop the bleeding. Busch lost a leg in the incident but is expected to survive.
