Bicyclist killed in Portland hit & run, suspect captured

PORTLAND, Ore. – The suspect in the death of a bicyclist in a hit-and-run crash in Northeast Portland Sunday has been captured. Police said Kenneth Britt Smith Jr., 26, was charged with manslaughter in the 2nd degree, criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving and driving under the influence of marijuana. The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. and investigators said there was a rear flashing red light on the bicycle. Police said they located a vehicle that matched the description at Northeast 97th Avenue and Killingsworth Street and took Smith into custody soon after.   Police have only said that he was 38 years old and wearing a helmet.

Witnesses told police the bicyclist was traveling eastbound on Lombard Street when he was struck from behind by a blue 2000 Ford Crown Victoria that quickly left the scene.
