Mother risks life to save daughter trapped inside car.
Try to imagine you are driving and suddenly you come upon a horrible car wreck on the side of the road and the car is on fire. Then it hits you like a thunderbolt -- that's your daughter's car, and she is trapped inside.
"To see something and come up on somebody's wreck and realize it's your own daughter, your own flesh and blood, it's something you ever want to go through," Estella Adkins said.
Kayla Adkins, 16, is a smart, bubbly, athletic Bay City High School student with a bright future.
But last Tuesday morning as she was driving to school, she swerved to avoid a deer and crashed into a tree. Suddenly she found herself pinned inside her own burning car.
Kayla Adkins's mother, Estella Adkins, was driving by and without any thought for her safety, or fear of the flames, she ran as fast as she could to rescue her daughter.
Two men, Estella Adkins said, grabbed her, tackled her and threw her to the ground, saying, "You can't." But Estella Adkins managed to break free.
"I said to myself, 'She's not going to go like this, she's gonna get out, I am going to do whatever I have to do, but she is going to get out,'" Estella Adkins said.
Then, as if sent by God, Estella Adkins said two men, Metagorda County Sheriff's Deputy Jake Roberts and attorney Garrett Sharp, were right there by the car reaching in and trying to free Kayla Adkins, whose legs were wedged between the steering wheel and the seat.Car explosion
"Those men saved my baby. How do you thank someone for that?" Estella Adkins said.
Actually, it was Estella Adkins that freed her daughters legs and pushed her out. The two men helped by pulling the teenager out of the burning car.
About 10 seconds after she was out, Estella Adkins said the gas tank blew and the car was instantly engulfed in flames.
As of Friday night, Kayla Adkins was being treated at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center.
Doctors said she is suffering from a traumatic brain injury, but she is awake and talking.
