A man and woman were behind bars after a high-speed police chase ended with a crash in southwest Salt Lake County early Thursday morning. West Jordan police Sgt. Dan Roberts said the chase began at 7800 S. Redwood Road, where police say the woman driver blew through a red light. The ensuing pursuit wound through residential areas and eventually onto Bangerter Highway, where the car ended up going the wrong way. Police used a "PIT maneuver" (where a pursuing officer abruptly turns into the suspect vehicle, forcing it off the road) and the car crashed into an embankment near 13800 South in Draper at 2:41 a.m. No one was injured. Roberts said a subsequent search of the vehicle made it clear why the couple were reluctant to initially pull over. Recovered were a rifle and a handgun — the latter confirmed stolen — along with cash, jewelry and identification documents all believed stolen, and an unspecified amount of methamphetamine. The woman, 20, and her 26-year-old male companion were booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of fleeing a police officer, drug possession, possession of stolen goods and firearms charges.
