Police say a 14-year-old boy was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident late Wednesday night in the southwestern Utah community of Hurricane.

“This is a very tragic situation for a 14 year old to lose his life. This is a reminder of the importance of constantly paying attention while driving and using a sidewalk when walking; it only takes seconds for a life altering incident to take place. Our hearts go out to the families involved,” police wrote in a news release.

Buell said there is a curfew law, but there was no curfew violation at the time the crash occurred, as the curfew for anyone under the age of 18 was changed from 11 p.m. to midnight in Hurricane.

"He was always reaching out to people, and whatever he could do to help someone else or make someone else’s day good, he would do it," said Faith Johnson, a classmate and friend of Gavin. "He was always trying his best in everything that he did."
A 14-year-old boy and three other juveniles were walking on 700 West when a Toyota pickup drifted toward them. The boy was hit, but the other three were able to get out of the way in time. The driver was reaching for food just before the crash. The boy's identity has not yet been released.
