Head-on crash kills Maple Falls man on Mt. Baker Highway
State Patrol Sgt. Mark Francis says a BMW driven by a 22-year-old Deming man was heading westbound on SR 542 near Everson Goshen Rd. behind a truck around 4 p.m. when he attempted a legal pass around the truck. Francis says the BMW then struck a Saturn traveling eastbound head-on. The 44-year-old Saturn driver was killed, but hasn’t been identified. The truck took minor damage when the BMW pivoted back into it during the accident, but the truck driver was unhurt.
Driver in Mt. Baker Highway crash booked on vehicular homicide
Connor Mackenzie Bloom, 22, was originally treated at St. Joseph hospital for his injuries, then taken to Whatcom County Jail, where he remained Friday.
Early Friday, Washington State Patrol publicly identified the driver who was killed as Ronald S. Baker, 44, of Maple Falls.

Bloom suffered serious injuries. He admitted to a trooper at the scene he had consumed marijuana earlier in the day, Quinn said, and as he was being rushed to the hospital Bloom told an ambulance crew that he had used methamphetamine.
