1 dead, trooper seriously injured in crash near Custer

CUSTER, Wash. (AP) - A woman has died and a Washington State Patrol trooper was seriously injured when a vehicle crashed into a trooper's patrol car as it sat parked along Interstate 5. Trooper Heather Axtman said the trooper was trapped inside the vehicle and suffered a head injury. Other news outlets reported the crash happened Friday afternoon on northbound I-5 near Custer. The trooper had stopped his vehicle on the side of the freeway to respond to a rollover crash and a car crashed into him as he sat inside. Axtman said the woman in the car that hit the patrol vehicle was unresponsive.

He was sitting in the cruiser with his lights flashing when the car was struck by a Buick LeSabre. The Bellingham Herald reports that Trooper Benjamin C. Ellis had parked his patrol car on the highway a little south of the Canadian border to investigate a one-car rollover crash Friday afternoon.
