A tragic hit-and-run collision on the Interstate Bridge in Marinette claimed the life of 48-year-old David Joseph Fournier of Menominee, Michigan in the early morning hours of July 15th. At approximately 2:18 a.m., Marinette County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a bicyclist struck by a vehicle on the bridge connecting Wisconsin and Michigan. First responders arrived to find Fournier unresponsive at the scene. Despite immediate lifesaving measures by emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the location. The Marinette Police Department has identified a person of interest and located the suspect vehicle. Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including police and fire departments from both Marinette and Menominee, Aurora Medical Center-Bay Area EMS, Marinette Emergency Rescue Squad, and the Marinette County Medical Examiner's Office.

Location and Infrastructure - The Interstate Bridge spans the Menominee River, connecting the cities of Marinette, Wisconsin and Menominee, Michigan via US Highway 41. This vital transportation link serves significant local and commercial traffic between the twin cities. The bridge features two lanes in each direction with narrow shoulders and sidewalks for pedestrian access. While the structure includes lighting for nighttime visibility, the convergence of two state jurisdictions and varying traffic patterns from both communities can create complex safety considerations, particularly during low-traffic overnight hours when visibility and emergency response times may be affected.

Legal Rights and Considerations - Under Wisconsin Statute 346.67, leaving the scene of a fatal accident is a Class D felony carrying significant penalties. Victims' families in such cases may be entitled to compensation through multiple channels, including the at-fault driver's insurance, their own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and potentially through civil litigation. Wisconsin's wrongful death statute (895.03) allows specific family members to seek damages, including loss of companionship and financial support. The statute of limitations for wrongful death claims in Wisconsin is generally three years from the date of death, making prompt legal consultation advisable. An experienced Marinette bike collision lawyer will handle all aspects of the legal claim.
