Deadly crash in Chippewa County takes one life
The Chippewa County Sheriff's Office stated that two cars were traveling in opposite directions on State Highway 64 about a quarter of a mile east of 102nd St. in the township of Bloomer when they collided. One car had five people inside including the driver who died at the scene. The other four were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

“The vehicles were traveling in opposite directions and collided at some point,” said Chippewa County Chief Deputy Chad Holum. “ One vehicle was occupied with 5 people. The operator of that vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other 4 passengers were transported by ambulance to local hospitals with unknown injuries.”
Names released in fatal Bloomer crash
Derek J. Thompson of Bloomer, who was born in 1983, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was driving a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country van, carrying four passengers.

Thompson was the driver of the Chrysler and the four other occupants, Brittany J. Thompson, 28, of Bloomer; Sandra L. Lowe, 49, of Bloomer; Blaine R. Seibel, 24, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Jessica L. Kleinhans, 22, Menomonie, were transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries.
Chad A. Sommer, 36, of Bloomer, was the driver of the Chevy and was also transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.
No charges to be filed in crash that killed Bloomer teacher
Gibbs says an investigation showed Sommer had stolen the keys to an SUV from a place where his mother had locked them up. He says Sommer did not have a drivers license and does not know how to drive.
