Milwaukee police have arrested a 24-year-old Milwaukee man suspected of driving the rental truck that crashed into a mother holding her 18-month-old girl, killing the toddler, a police spokesman said Friday. The man has not yet been named.

Cheyenne Jackson, 21, and her 18-month-old daughter, Ariana Matosek, were in a crosswalk at S. 6th and W. Hayes streets, heading west, shortly before 4:20 p.m. Wednesday when the truck hit them. Jackson was taken to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The suspect was ticketed in March for operating without a license. He was ticketed in August for several traffic offenses, including operating after suspension and failing to register a vehicle, Milwaukee municipal court records show.

In the August case, the man was ordered to pay a $114 by Dec. 10 or face a two-year license suspension. Online court records do not indicate whether he had made his payment.

The investigation is ongoing.
