The 25-year-old woman who died Thursday, a day after crashing her vehicle into the river off of the 27th Street viaduct, was identified Friday as Jessenia T. Dhanjal.

Two dive rescue team members who began walking across the frozen river toward the vehicle went through the ice up to about their chests and shoulders. They then used their arms and elbows to chop their way to the vehicle, Lipski said.
Members of the Milwaukee Fire Department Dive Rescue Team used arms and elbows to chop their way through the ice-covered Menomonee River on Wednesday, pulling a woman from a submerged vehicle that went off the 27th St. viaduct, a fire official said. Milwaukee police say a 25-year-old woman and a 19-year-old female passenger were drag racing when the driver lost control of her vehicle, which went over a concrete barrier went off the 27th St. viaduct just north of Canal Street into the Menomonee River shortly before 6 p.m. Firefighters spotted the roof of the submerged vehicle in the water, as well as the 19-year-old passenger who had escaped the vehicle standing on the west shoreline. Upon learning that the other woman was trapped inside the car, the rescuers trekked through frozen ice and water up to their shoulders to extract the the driver. The woman was revived by paramedics, and both women were taken to a hospital, where the driver, Jessenia T. Dhanjal, later died. The 19-year-old passenger was treated for exposure and released,
