A motorcyclist died Sunday after hitting a bear on Highway 64 near Hill Road.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says it has never seen such a crash on a well traveled highway before.

The Langlade County Sheriff identified the victim as Gary Stevens, 50, of Bowler, Wisconsin.

Investigators say he was the only one on the bike.

At first he was taken to Langlade Hospital by ambulance and then flown to Aspirus Hospital in Wasau.

He died later that day.

The DNR which often issues alerts about deer car collisions says a bear versus motorcycle crash is rare.

Bikers have tried to warn others via social media by sharing information and photos of the crash.

A quick search of YouTube also has video of several instances of bears darting across the road in front of motorcycles and near popular biker hangouts like "Rick's Roadhouse" off of HWY 45 in Antigo.

Officials say these encounters are more commonly associated with remote country roads.

To have this happen on a well traveled roadway by bikers in the middle of the day is cause for concern, but not part of a trend.

The whereaboutsof the bear are unknown.
