A pedestrian suffered a life-threatening injury Tuesday in Pacific Beach after being hit in the head by the side-view mirror of a motor home.

The 47-year-old victim was standing just off the curb in a crosswalk at Ingraham Street at La Playa Avenue about 2:30 p.m. when he was struck by a 1972 Winnebago, a San Diego police detective said.

The 40-year-old driver was heading south when her brakes failed, and she swerved to the right to avoid the car in front of her. That vehicle had stopped for the pedestrian.

A family escaped injury Tuesday night, when a car slammed into their City Heights apartment building.

The San Diego Police Department said the wreck occurred at 10:15 p.m. at a two-story complex at Menlo Avenue and Olive Street.

The driver stated that his Honda Accord lost power, which resulted in a brake and steering failure.

The man's family was also in the car as it coasted down Olive Street and through Menlo Avenue before crashing into the building.

Traffic was backed up Tuesday night on Interstate 8 east in the Mission Valley area due to a multi-vehicle collision.

One vehicle was on its side, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported about 6:35 p.m. near Mission Center Road.

A family of four was in one of the vehicles, the CHP said. They were able to get out on their own.

Debris was reported to be scattered in several lanes

Emergency crews are responding to reports that a vehicle crashed into the side of a house in Chula Vista.

The incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 2400 block of Eagle Valley Drive, near Saddlehorn Drive.

According to the Chula Vista Fire Department, the vehicle went through a 6-foot fence and struck the side of the house. Firefighters are in the process of rescuing someone who was trapped in the vehicle.

San Diego Gas & Electric crews are responding due to electrical damage to the home. Some structural damage was also reported.

The southbound Interstate 5 off-ramp to Oceanside Boulevard was shut down for several hours after a big rig overturned, according to Caltrans.

The incident was reported shortly before 11 a.m. and does not appear to involve any other vehicles.

The off-ramp was reopened at about 2:15 p.m.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Lanes have reopened on the westbound 210 Freeway in La Crescenta after a big-rig fire forced a full closure early Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight just east of the Lowell Boulevard off-ramp in the Glendale/La-Crescenta area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

All westbound lanes of the 210 were closed between Lowell and the Pennsylvania Avenue off-ramps. Two lanes reopened at about 6:20 a.m. All lanes have since reopened.

Two drivers were injured Tuesday night in a head-on collision on state Route 94 near Dulzura, and one was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said. The crash occurred about 7:50 p.m. west of Honey Springs Road. Both lanes of Route 94 were closed for a short time during the investigation.

A major accident involving multiple cars has at least 3 lanes blocked on a busy Roseville interchange. The crash happened on westbound Interstate 80 just before the highway 65 junction. At least seven cars and a big rig were reportedly involved in this accident that has injured several people. Police say two people are in custody Monday morning after slamming a vehicle filled with drugs into a parked car overnight in Logan Heights.

The San Diego Police Department said the wreck occurred at 10:45 p.m. Sunday on the 3800 block of National Avenue.

According to officers, the woman was driving on Logan Avenue when she lost control of her gray Lexus and hit a parked SUV.

Witnesses said that the driver of the SUV came out to help and saw the woman swallowing something and her male passenger hiding things in the car.

A chain-reaction crash that killed a woman and mangled seven cars may have been triggered by a suspected drunk driver. The incident occurred at the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Vanalden Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. Monday. Police say the driver of a silver car likely triggered the wreck, and alcohol and speed may have contributed to the accident.
