A 70-year-old man piloting a twin-engine Cessna was injured Friday evening when his plane crashed near Witham Field in Stuart, authorities said.
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. in a grassy area along the 1000 block of Southeast Federal Highway near Southeast Tressler Avenue, said Officer Brian Bossio, city police spokesman.
Police identified the pilot late Friday as Marlin Moudy, a native of Wyoming.
Moudy was trying to land at Witham Field, which lies just southeast of the crash site. He avoided hitting several homes as his plane was crashing, authorities said.
A Duke University senior from Cary died Friday in a car crash on Interstate 10 in northern Florida.
The university says Rebecca DeNardis and six other students were traveling in a van with the director of Duke's Outdoor Adventure program when it was struck by another vehicle.
DeNardis was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Another student, identified as Joao Correia Marques, 21, was airlifted to a hospital in Pensacola, and a third student was treated and released.
Charges are pending against the driver who hit them.

The incident happened after 6:30 p.m. Friday at State Road 40 and Creek Haven Road.
The man was traveling eastbound on S.R. 40 on his 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Troopers said 70-year-old Robert Bendlin, of Ormond Beach, was traveling westbound on S.R. 40 in his 2006 Saturn SUV and 60-year-old Lynn Temple, of Palm Coast, was traveling eastbound on S.R. 40 in her 2009 Nissan, behind the motorcyclist.
A pedestrian was rushed to the hospital after they were struck by a car in Ridgefield Friday night.
The incident happened around 10:00 p.m. in the area of 570 Ridgebury Road.
Ridgefield Police said they are investigating the incident. The driver stayed at the scene and is being interviewed by investigators.
Ridgebury Road is closed from Benson Road to Chestnut Hill Road.
The victim was transported to Danbury Hospital in unknown condition.
Oregon State Police continues to investigate a serious injury traffic crash that happened Thursday afternoon along Highway 11 near Athena in Umatilla County.

A tractor-trailer crash snarled traffic along a heavily-traveled road in South Jersey Friday morning.
The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-295 at the Creek Road underpass approaching Route 42.
A tractor-trailer lost control and slammed into an embankment. The driver was not seriously injured.
There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
As a result of the crash, only the two lefts lanes were able to squeeze by. Officials said the tractor was going to stay where it was until the morning rush hour was over.
Two women suffered non-life threatening injuries Friday morning when their car was hit by another vehicle at the intersection of 56th Street West and Hesper Drive.
Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Craig Baum said the driver of a passenger car eastbound on Hesper was traveling the 60 mph speed limit when he went through a Stop sign and hit another car that was northbound on 56th. The accident happened at about 7:15 a.m.
The crash took out a Stop sign and both cars ultimately landed upright in a field on the northeast side of the intersection.
A man is facing several charges after leading authorities on a high speed chase through Wake County overnight.
Around midnight Friday, authorities said 23-year-old Nicholas Heggie crashed on Blaney Franks Road, off Ten Ten Road in Raleigh following the chase.
Details surrounding the incident have not been released.
Heggie was later booked into the Wake County Jail on charges of fleeing to elude arrest, aggressive driving, and driving while impaired.

A motorcyclist is in the hospital after a police chase ended in a fiery crash.
An officer spotted the biker and another vehicle speeding on Westheimer near Briar Park at around 1 a.m. Investigators say the officer chased after the speeding vehicles until the biker ran into a car that was stopped at a red light.
The motorcycle then spun and hit the officer's squad car before bursting into flames.
The biker is now being treated for minor burns and faces felony evading charges.
