Driver of stolen semi Nicolas Appert, 20, flees after crash kills motorcyclist Eric Leoni, 48, on Hwy 41 near Hanford, California
The California Highway Patrol said the truck driver fled after the crash, which happened about 5 a.m. near Mt. Whitney Avenue.
Traffic on the highway was rerouted while the crash was investigated. The highway was reopened about 8 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) closed Highway 41 from Harlan Avenue to Laguna Avenue for several hours after a flatbed semi-truck slammed into a motorcycle, killing the rider. Investigators say the motorcycle was stopped at the traffic light when the truck struck from behind, dragging the motorcycle and the driver into a field.
Police say Appert did not see a red light or the motorcyclist, and plowed right in to him. Appert ran away from the crash, but was arrested.
