Bennington pilot, 62, dies after crashing homemade plane in Ottawa County in central Kansas

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the fatality victim as Delwyn Schmidt. SALINA — A 62-year-old Bennington man has died after the homemade airplane he was flying crashed shortly after takeoff Sunday evening in Ottawa County in central Kansas. The crash scene was about 10 miles north of the Interstate 70-Interstate 135 interchange and around 500 feet from US-81 highway. At that point, officials said, the experimental plane lost power, and Schmidt wasn’t able to make an emergency landing. Authorities said Schmidt took off from property near his house at 93 Autumn Lane in Bennington and was off on his ascent.
