Kansas Air National Guardsman killed in vehicle crash

Three airmen from the 284th Air Support Operations Squadron were injured when their vehicle overturned.  Two were taken to a Salina hospital for treatment.   The third died en route to a Wichita hospital.  The 284th ASOS is based out of the Smoky Hill ANG Range and is part of the 184th Wing of Wichita.

The names of the Guardsmen haven’t been released. The Kansas National Guard said the Airman were stationed with the 184th Wing in Wichita and the 284th Air Support Operations Squadron which is based out of the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range.

“Today we lost a member of our family under unfortunate circumstances,” said Col. Jason Knobbe, commander, 184th Wing. “We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow guardsmen. We will continue caring for the injured airmen and provide assistance to their loved ones. Their health, safety and well-being is our top priority.”

Kansas National Guard airman killed in training accident identified, 2 others injured

Staff Sgt. Wesley Kubie, 30, of Salina, was unresponsive and medically evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Wichita. Officials say Kubie died en route and was taken to a hospital McPherson, Kansas. The two other airmen involved in the incident have been identified as Staff Sgt. Jaden Johnson, 23, of Salina and Staff Sgt. Cole Frederick, 28, of Topeka. Both sustained injuries and are being treated at a Salina hospital.
