Police said Refvik had a blood alcohol level of .145 after the crash, nearly double the legal limit. He has been suspended from his firefighter job without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
Erik Refvik was driving on Martine Ave when he allegedly turned the wrong way onto South Lexington, a one-way street. He then allegedly T-boned a Honda carrying newspaper delivery person Reyda La Madrid and Edgar Lopez as they were crossing South Lexington Avenue. Refvik's vehicle continued on South Lexington Avenue after the collisions, pushing the Honda about 200 feet down the road and trapping both La Madrid and Lopez inside. La Madrid was pronounced dead at the scene, and Lopez was taken to the hospital with internal and upper body injuries.
