Driver in fatal accident identified

Murphy did not notice the reduction in speed in time, and attempted evasive actions before hitting the back of Patel’s semi-trailer.

The driver of a Ford F-250 pick-up truck who was killed in a two car motor vehicle accident Friday afternoon was identified by authorities as Matthew Murphy, 44, of Winnsboro.

His 8-year-old passenger was taken to a Dallas-area hospital via helicopter Friday, but HIPAA rules prevent authorities from releasing information on his identity or condition. The driver of the 18-wheeler semi-trailer also involved in the accident was identified as Mukesh Patel, 52, from Plainfield, Ind. He was not injured in the crash.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Lonny Lonny Haschel, the accident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. Patel was traveling on Interstate 30 Eastbound in front of Murphy when Patel reduced his speed due to traffic ahead.

Murphy did not notice the reduction in speed in time, and attempted evasive actions before hitting the back of Patel’s semi-trailer.

Murphy was later pronounced dead on the scene. The accident occurred near mile marker 108.

Eastbound lanes of I-30 were backed up for miles following the crash, and the highway wasn’t opened back up until well into the evening hours.
