Fiery crash kills teen at Plano intersection

Police say two teenagers were in a sport utility vehicle that crashed and burned at a Plano intersection early Sunday morning, killing the driver and injuring his passenger. Plano police spokesman David Tilley said the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe erupted in flames after crashing head-on into a traffic signal pole in the northbound lanes of Preston Road at Tennyson Parkway, right in front of LifeCare Hospitals of Plano. Witnesses were able to pull passenger Daniel Payton Mushock, 18, from the wreckage; the driver, Alger Ben Baker III, also 18, died. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, investigators said.

Police say Ben Baker was driving northbound on Preston Road, when his SUV left the road and crashed into a traffic light pole. The SUV had caught fire by the time drivers in the area stopped to help. When they returned to try and help Baker the SUV was engulfed in flames and they couldn'€™t reach him. Friends and co-workers of Baker stopped by the crash site to lay flowers and remember the teenager, who had just graduated high school and was set to attend Baylor University in August.
