An Arlington teen was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle early Saturday after she fell or jumped from the SUV, police said.

Witnesses told in investigators that 17-year-old Lelys Leyva-Monreal was riding with four other people around 2:45 a.m. when she began hanging out the window.

She tumbled from the SUV, even though one of her friends attempted to pull her inside.

After hitting the pavement in the 1500 block of South Cooper Street, Leyva-Monreal was run over by the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at Medical Center of Arlington a short time later.

A Police spokeswoman said the driver of the SUV left the scene as the three passengers waited with the victim for emergency help.

The driver, whose name was not released, was later located by police.

"Although it is still early in the investigation, alcohol is being investigated as a possible factor in this incident," police said in a written statement.

On Saturday night classmates, friends, and family gathered for a candlelight vigil along the road where the accident happened.
