Police said a 22-year-old woman, identified as Doan Khanh Thuc Mai, was driving when her 2012 Nissan Rogue was rear-ended after she slammed on her brakes. The Rogue was pushed into another lane where a Dodge Ram pickup truck crashed into the passenger side, throwing the 5-year-old boy out of the vehicle. He was not secured in a child safety seat.

According to San Antonio authorities, the child, Tony Tran, was not using a child seat when the car he was in suddenly braked in the southbound lanes near Santa Paula around 5:30 p.m. That caused the car to be hit from behind before it swerved and collided with a truck.
